Be productive, make a list and check it off

Everyone is busy, especially this time of the year, and when you have a million things to do, the one thing that can help save your sanity is a LIST.

There are lists, and then there are lists, use these to get your stuff done.

Six lists that will definitely help you be more productive.

  1. the wellknown TODO list, make it specific
  2. an OUTSOURCE list; it makes sense to get help
  3. LONG TERM goals list for where you want to get
  4. a PROS & CONS list when you have to make decisions
  5. a PROJECT list so you don’t miss any details
  6. a TALKING POINT list, avoid rambling on or running out of time in a meeting.

And how does this all apply to your life, or your business?

Avoid these 3 mistakes in your micro business

Yes, nobody is perfect and we all make mistakes, but as a micro business owner wouldn’t you want to avoid mistakes that keep your business from growing? Here are three important things most micro business owners do that don’t help them get ahead.

  1. They don’t delegate; they do everything themselves. Why? It could be a control issue, a serious case of perfectionism, and sometimes money plays a role too. But if you think about it, wouldn’t it make more sense to have an assistant or VA help you schedule meetings at say, $30/hour when your hourly rate is $75 or $200? Your time is much too valuable to spend on minute tasks when you could be working on generating more income. I know, it’s hard to give up control or to resist checking your copy one more time, but keeping the value of your time in mind might help you step back and let your VA take over the nitty gritty tasks.
  2. Spending too much time learning new stuff. Knowledge is power, but really, there is not enough time in the world to learn everything we want to know. If the new stuff is not going to enhance your service or product directly, it may not be worth your time spent on training. You already know what you need to know to help your customers, but if you can serve them better with the training, just go for it! Otherwise, leave the details on how to customize your website header to your webmaster or VA.
  3. Too much focus on creating a beautiful website instead of it’s functionality. Some websites are works of art, but unless you’re a photographer, visitors to your site will probably be more interested in finding information, quickly. They only “have” a few seconds to find what they’re looking for before they get frustrated and hit the Back button on their browser. And what’s worse, they will never come back again! When creating your website, think like your customer. What would you look for, where on the site would you expect certain information to be posted? Then hand off your rough draft to the web designer and let him/her worry about the details.

If you are making these mistakes, don’t worry, it’s not so painful to make changes and reverse the effects. Look at your business, determine what can be improved and start with small steps. You will not regret setting these priorities. Good luck!

Why your website should go mobile

Did you know that 50% of global mobile device users are accessing the internet via their mobile? That translates into 1.2 billion users

Almost 30% of all emails are opened on mobile phones. People don’t wait to read emails on their PC’s at home anymore.

Those are staggering numbers but they are real and if you weren’t sure whether you should make your site responsive or not, this data should push you off the fence. Making your site responsive means that your website will automatically detect if the browser is using a mobile device (smartphone or tablet) and adapt appropriately, so the site visitor will be able to clearly see and read your website without having to squint. You make their visit easy and pleasant, people will stay and browse, maybe even buy!

Check out this 2013 Infographic by www.supermonitoring.com, they did a great job visualizing the data.

3 Simple video gallery plugins for WordPress

IMG_6180.jpgA picture is worth a thousand words

When it comes to images, the top bloggers all sing the same tune: they can make or (its lack) break your site! With millions of websites and tons of information floating on the Internet, you have to do anything you can to make your website or blog stand out. Pictures or videos are just much more appealing than plain text and they make it easier to get the point across.

One of the reasons I like WordPress, is the availability of plugins to make your website do almost anything you want or need. However, the problem is often: choosing the right plugin from all the available options! Part of my job (and I do enjoy it) is to find the right tools for my clients and make them happy with their website. In my searches I found video gallery plugins that have similar or different features, some of them easy to use and others not so, that I wanted to share with you.

3 Simple WordPress video gallery plugins

I have tried and tested the following free video gallery plugins that I highly recommend for ease of use. If you are looking for a fast video gallery solution, one of these plugins will do the trick. The number one reason is that your learning curve will be 0, to very short!

Cool Video Gallery plugin

Cool Video Gallery

Cool Video Gallery gets 4 out of 5 stars in the WordPress.org plugin directory and I found it very easy to use. This Video Gallery plugin offers options to upload videos, attach media files, add YouTube videos and manage them in multiple galleries. This plugin supports multiple video file formats and is regularly updated by the creator. Download Cool Video Gallery for your WordPress blog.

WordPress Video Plugin also receives 4 out of 5 starts by WordPress.org. This free plugin adds a filter that allows easy video embedding in WordPress of more than 60 supported video sites, such as Hulu, Slideshare and Vimeo. You can download WordPress Video Plugin here.

Smart YouTube Pro has over 1 million downloads to date and is a great WordPress Video plugin that allows you to easily insert videos/playlists into your post, comments and in your RSS feed. One of the best features is that it works on iPads and iPhones too. See more details about the Smart YouTube Pro plugin I highlighted in an earlier post. This is where you can download the plugin.

Can’t make up your mind? Just download, install, and try all three of them to see which one you like best. You can always deactivate and delete the ones you don’t want.

Are you using another video gallery plugin? Which one, and how do you like it? Add your comment below to share. Thanks!
